How to: Make a splash in social media

Create rain drops, not one big splash with social media

Way back when in the last century or even decade it probably made sense to put all your $$$$$ and time into one big splash of attention in hopes that enough people would notice you or the event.

pepsi.jpg  Pepsi spent $142 million in the last decade just in Super Bowl ads.  But this year they have a social media campaign to put their 'rain drops' into thousands of events and activities.  Spending $20 million.  A million here a million there, lots of impressions of their brand instead of one BIG splash.

As I don't have that sort of budget, my strategy is to make lots of 'splashes' across many forms of social media.  With the ease of copy/paste, linking URLs, RSS feeds, and the like I can connect and share my social media footprints with a minimum of effort for maximum exposure.  Several points to make it work for you as well:

  • Spread your brand message/identity in a consistent style/look
  • Create links between social media sites whenever possible.
    • Posting a YouTube video can also go onto Facebook, Twitter, Google Reader
  • Use right 20% of social media sites that will reach 80% of your audience
Try it and let me know how it rains on your parade of social media efforts and being famous for more than 15 minutes.
