Session 3 Two-Minute/Two Page Resumes: How to package yourself

Ways to Win
  • Sessions 3-5 will be how to package yourself
  • No excuse to have an ordinary resume
  • Most direct path to new job is relationship with another person
  • Resume Evolution: activities to achievements
  • Know Like Trust (KLT factors) important in resumes, both verbal and written form
  • Two pillars of self-promotion: Competence & Character
  • Homework for Session 4: make a list of your attributes-who you are
  • Include #, %, or $ values on resumes to prove tangible achievements to support your attributes
  • Tangible values can be ConSWAG = conservative scientific wild-assessed guess
Resumes
  • Everybody has opinion about resumes. When opinions offered ask why
  • Two minute verbal resume
    • Tell me about yourself-be clear concise and compelling
    • answer why are you looking
    • answer what do you want to do
    • The more you say the less people remember-Will Rogers
    • be brief tell them what not how it was done
    • verbal resumes start and end with question
    • Includes prework, past work, present work statements
    • Tell the truth the whole truth nothing but the truth...just not the gosh-awful truth
  • Two page resume
    • purpose of resume is to get interview
    • written resume is a door opener, then discussion outline, finally directing others after interview
    • If not asked don't submit resume. No piece of paper can sell you to the job better than yourself
    • WIIFT= what's in it for them. Write to the hiring authorities point of view
    • Styles & Types of resumes
      • Chronological-most popular but can hide some of your best work long ago
      • Hierarchical & functional are center-staged formats

  • Create your attribute-achievement arsenal
  • Develop your two minute resume
