Session 4 Communication Connection:
How to Write Right

  • God loves me this much and wants the very best for me.
  • Sticks and stones may break my bones, but so will words
  • Quality and competency of written communications is big distinguishing value in job search
  • There are no traffic jams on the 'extra mile'
  • Build better letters
  • 15 keys to writing right (invest in yourself and get a notebook with samples of material)
  • Many job seekers have myopia, they have 'I' trouble
  • Initial screening of written communications is to eliminate candidates
  • Make your life a statement not an apology
  • A good resume is not written but re-written
  • Pre-Interview Letters
    • Solicited vs. Unsolicited letters
    • Don't bury the lead in cover letters; open with one-two sentences
    • Don't program yourself for rejection
    • Finish strong in letters
    • State follow-up plan with solicited letters
    • Tell hiring authority that you will be following up by certain date/time
  • Post-Interview
    • Write thank you notes to everyone, better than email
    • Stay top of mind with thank you notes, references IF REQUESTED, followup mtg
    • References-when asked, ask which kind
  • End of search announcements
    • don't wait too long
  • On-Line applications
    • works to disadvantage of job seeker and employer
    • can't make yourself stand out
