Is it office proxmity or email access that counts in the 21st Century?

For the longest time ranking among White House staff determined or was determined by how close your office was next to the Oval Office. With the 44th President and the 18th one to use the Oval Office, it might be the people who can email him.

I wonder who that might be. If you are that individual, then anywhere you are is next to the President. Can you imagine if you were person-to-person with President Obama and he gets an email. If he looks at it right then, that sure sends a message of your lesser importance vs. the emailer. Or if he doesn't then maybe you do matter.

Personally it has always annoyed me when I am talking to someone and they get an email or phone call and answer it. What am I, chopped liver? I took the time to be with you, to have a conversation while the other person isn't here.
